About Philip

Dr. Philip Edgcumbe (MD, PhD) is a UBC radiology resident, an entrepreneur, a biomedical engineer and a clinician-scientist. He speaks on the topics of disruptive technology and the future of healthcare.

He has invented, patented, and licensed an augmented-reality navigational aid for surgical robotics and has co-founded two biomedical start-up companies. In 2017, he worked for the XPRIZE Foundation in Los Angeles where he led the development of the Alzheimer’s XPRIZE, a global, crowd-sourcing competition to end Alzheimer’s. In 2018-2019 he served as the Innovator-in-Residence for the Canadian Medical Association Innovation Lab. In 2020 he co-founded the Collective Open Source Medicine Innovations for COVID19 (COSMIC) not-for-profit organization.

Biomedical Engineer

Philip completed a PhD in biomedical engineering (UBC MDPhD 2020) and holds a patent for a device for surgical navigation. Philip works with teams to catalyze innovation via design thinking workshops.

Philip led a team that developed an international crowdsourcing XPRIZE competition to end Alzheimer's. Philip is a co-founder and board member of COSMIC. He speaks on the topics of moonshot thinking, crowdsourcing, disruptive technology and the future of healthcare.
